What you don’t see in this article is that one of the first changes enacted in 2009, was the relaxing of the rules to qualify for social security disability income. If a person is on disability for 24 months, then beginning in the 25th month they become Medicare-eligible. This has been a significant portion of the increase in the Medicare budget since about 2011, but you will not hear Washington talk about it.
